Welcome to Year 2!
We have 3 classes – 2M, 2H and 2S taught by Miss Moran, Miss Haynes and Mr Smith. We also have some amazing support staff that work with the children which day, these are Mrs Laferla, Mrs Gobbi, Mr Dutton, Miss Allen and Miss McIlroy.
We change reading books every Monday and Friday. Monday’s the children choose a levelled book and on Friday’s they choose a levelled book along with a free reader book of their choice. In order to use our library-style system, we need children to bring back their signed Reading Record and the book they have read in order to exchange it for a new book. It is incredibly important that your child is reading regularly and discussing the text that they have read. Please ensure Reading Records are in school every day as the children are read with at school and will have this signed for in their books.
In May, Year 2 will be taking part in the end of KS1 SATs. These tests support us in assessing your child’s reading, writing and maths abilities. Alongside your child’s test scores, we also use our teacher assessment based on what learning we have seen your child complete in class. These results will be shared with you in the end of year reports that are sent home.
Year 2 will take part in an upcoming workshop for our new topic Live and Let Live. Children will be given the opportunity to explore ‘rainforest creatures’ up close!
PE days - Please ensure your child has their PE kit ready when they have PE.

IPC
This half term, our IPC topic will be ‘Live and Let Live’. This is largely a Science topic where children will explore a range of living things and their needs. Children will have opportunities to explore life cycles and food chains and think about how these vary across different species. We will also take part in various PSHE activities where we think about how to stay safe, healthy and consider how our feelings affect how we behave.
English
This half term we will begin our poetry work by looking at a book called Lila and the secret of the rain. In addition, to poetry we will also be focusing on how we can write a newspaper report and how we can write our own set of instructions for someone to follow. These new topics will also be reinforced by previous areas of the English curriculum to ensure the children are secure in their knowledge.
Maths
This half term, we will be exploring the 5 and 10 times tables. We will link this learning to our knowledge of halving and doubling as well as investigating how to divide by 5 and 10. We will then move onto identifying various measurements including centimetres and metres and learning how to compare lengths and heights.
Science
In Science and PSHE, we will be thinking about our brain and how it helps us to learn. We will explore the best ways for us to learn and how to prepare for big challenges. We will also think about how to record our learning and how we’re getting on.

Homework
Please find below the homework menu for this half term. Homework is set on a Friday and is due in on Wednesday every week.
