Welcome to Year 1!

Our Topic- Treasure Island

English

In English, we are looking at becoming poets, independent writers and understanding role play/ drama. Our new book ‘Wild’ is all about a girl who was bought up in the wild and lives with animals. We are thinking about how her life is the same or different to ours and what it is like to live in the wild. We will be producing poems and extended pieces of writing, using a range of adjectives and conjunctions.

Maths

In Maths we will be learning developing our knowledge of place value to 10.  To help with this we will explore counting objects and sequencing numbers.

We will also be looking at 1 more and 1 less using our skills of counting forwards and backwards.

Reading

Reading books will be given out on a Monday and kept at home until the Friday. Reading books should be returned to school by the Friday to ensure that new books can be given out the following Monday.

Reading at school will continue with the form of Guided Reading. This is directed teaching of reading, including phonics and discussion and interpretation of the text. We spend time looking at word meanings and an author’s use of language for description and detail.

As their reading ability improves, these skills become more important than merely reading the words.  We want to inspire the children to have a love for reading, so it is vital they understand and can discuss what they have read. When reading at home, please spend time questioning your child about aspects of the story, characters actions etc, in order to help develop their understanding of the text.
